FIS Race Ski Sizing Guidelines

FIS regulations change frequently, so it is best to consult with your coach or local ski expert before making a final purchase. Please see the current FIS Specifications for Competition Equipment and USSA/FIS Equipment Rules for specific age and circuit rules.

NON-FIS Race Ski Sizing Guidelines

There are varying opinions on how to best size skis, but the most accurate method to size race skis is based on the athlete's weight. The chart below recommends what size should work best for young athletes using one pair of skis for both events and athletes using Slalom (SL) and Giant Slalom (GS) specific skis. If an older athlete is using one pair for both events, it is best to choose an SL ski that is one size longer than the ideal SL length. A long SL ski will still work for SL and be very serviceable for GS. These are loose guidelines, and you should consult your local coach or ski expert for more specific recommendations.

Sizing Considerations:

  1. Consult FIS, USSA, and other level appropriate regulations.

Click here for 2025-2026 FIS SPECIFICATIONS FOR ALPINE COMPETITION EQUIPMENT
  2. Racer's ability level and preference - more advanced skiers can generally handle longer length skis, which can be more stable at higher speeds.
  3. Growth of the athlete - you may want to consider sizing up a little if you want to get multiple years out of a younger racer's skis, although most coaches agree that skiing on a slightly shorter ski the second year is preferable to skiing on a ski that is too long.
  4. Coach's recommendations.

Description & Features

The Volkl Racetiger JR GS ski is a junior giant slalom race ski built to support developing athletes as they progress through GS racing. Designed with input from Völkl athletes and their families, it delivers a balanced mix of precision, stability, and forgiveness.

A Grown Layup construction adjusts Titanal thickness and wood core composition by length, ensuring each ski matches the strength, size, and skill level of the athlete. This creates a consistent feel across the size range while supporting proper technique and progression.

The slightly wider shovel helps initiate turns earlier and stay on line above the gate. Combined with full sidewalls, tip rocker, and a race-tuned base, this GS ski provides reliable edge grip and smooth control as racers develop confidence at speed.

Construction & Technology

Grown Layup

Construction is tuned by length, adjusting Titanal thickness and wood core composition to match skier size and ability. This ensures consistent performance and progression across the full size range.

Full Titanal Construction

Titanal layers provide stability and damping, helping young racers maintain control and confidence at higher speeds.

Multi-layer Wood Core

A blend of beech and poplar balances strength, durability, and weight. The ratio changes by length to better match athlete development and performance needs.

Full Sidewall ABS

Provides consistent edge grip and precise power transfer for better control on firm race surfaces.

Tip Rocker

An early-rise tip improves turn initiation while maintaining strong edge hold through the rest of the ski.

Zebra Base Structure

An aggressive base pattern that improves glide and steering precision in GS race conditions.

Race Finish

World Cup-level base and edge preparation designed for maximum grip and speed.
