Selecting the correct ski boot is one of the most important equipment decisions a racer can make. A properly fitted race boot improves control, edge engagement, power transfer, and comfort while helping athletes develop strong technical skills. This guide explains how to determine both the correct boot flex and Mondopoint size for alpine ski racing.

Quick Navigation: Boot Flex | Boot Size | Fit Notes

Determining Ski Boot Flex

Ski boot flex refers to how much resistance a boot provides when the skier flexes forward. In general, heavier and more aggressive racers require stiffer boots, while lighter or less experienced athletes benefit from a softer flex that is easier to bend and control.

A useful starting point is to compare racer weight to the recommended flex range below. Most racers perform best when their body weight is approximately 10–30 pounds higher than the flex rating of the boot. Skill level, strength, terrain, discipline, and personal preference can all influence the ideal choice.

Race Place Tip: These recommendations are intended as general guidelines. Consult your coach, boot fitter, or Race Place ski expert for personalized recommendations. Ski boot flex ratings can vary significantly between manufacturers.

Ski Boot Flex Recommendations

Racer Weight (lbs) Racer Weight (kg) Recommended Flex
50–80 23–36 65
80–100 36–45 70
100–120 45–54 90
120–150 54–68 110
130–160 60–73 120
150+ 68+ 130–140

Determining Your Ski Boot Size

Ski boots use the Mondopoint (MP) sizing system, which measures foot length in centimeters. Unlike street shoe sizes, Mondopoint sizing provides a more precise measurement for ski boot fitting.

For the most accurate measurement, stand with your heel against a wall and measure from the wall to the tip of your longest toe in centimeters. The resulting measurement is your approximate Mondopoint size.

Because race boots are designed for maximum precision and responsiveness, many racers choose a close-performance fit. Actual fit can vary slightly between brands and models, so we recommend trying on a similar boot whenever possible.

Race Place Fit Notes

  • Junior racers often benefit more from a properly fitting boot than a stiffer boot.
  • A race boot should fit snugly without causing pain or restricting circulation.
  • Performance-oriented race fits typically feel tighter than recreational ski boots.
  • Boot flex ratings are not standardized and can vary between manufacturers.
  • Professional boot fitting can significantly improve comfort, performance, and long-term development.

Description & Features

The Lange World Cup RS 140 ski race boot delivers the close fit, powerful support, and direct energy transmission required by elite alpine racers. Its 95mm World Cup race last provides greater foot compression and precision than Lange's 97mm RS platform, while the powerful 140 flex supports strong, technically advanced racers in SL and GS.

Dual Core construction delivers controlled flex, powerful rebound, and responsive energy transfer through the turn, while Lange's Aero Design streamlines the exterior profile for race-focused aerodynamic performance. A World Cup liner and footbed create a precise connection inside the shell, while the 50mm Cam-Lock power strap, Dual Canting, and solid race sole complete a performance-focused setup for high-level training and race-day performance.

Fit & Performance Technology

95mm World Cup Race Fit

The 95mm last creates an exceptionally close, low-volume race fit designed to minimize unwanted foot movement and maximize precision. It bridges the gap between Lange's 97mm RS platform and the narrower 92mm World Cup Z-series plug boots, giving elite racers a highly precise fit with slightly more room than the full 92mm platform.

Dual Core

Dual Core construction combines plastics with different characteristics to control how the shell flexes, loads, and releases energy. The construction increases elastic tension for powerful rebound, progressive flex, and responsive energy transfer through the turn.

Aero Design

Lange's Aero Design applies a streamlined approach to the exterior shape of the race boot. The optimized shell and low-profile buckle geometry are designed to reduce aerodynamic drag while maintaining the precise fit, support, and power transmission required for high-level racing.

Polyurethane Ether Shell

The polyurethane ether lower shell provides the firm, responsive structure required for high-level race skiing. Its performance-focused construction supports precise bootfitting and efficient transmission of skier input to the ski.

World Cup Liner & Footbed

The World Cup liner and World Cup Footbed complement the close-fitting 95mm shell with a race-focused internal setup. The combination prioritizes secure foot hold, precise control, and direct power transmission.

Dual Canting

Dual Canting provides cuff alignment adjustment to help match the boot to the racer's lower-leg position. Proper alignment can help create more balanced edging and consistent ski response when the boot is professionally fitted and set up for the athlete.

50mm Cam-Lock Power Strap

The wide 50mm Cam-Lock strap reinforces the upper cuff and helps maintain a secure connection between the skier's lower leg and boot. The Cam-Lock closure allows precise tensioning for consistent support under race loads.
