Selecting the correct ski boot is one of the most important equipment decisions a racer can make. A properly fitted race boot improves control, edge engagement, power transfer, and comfort while helping athletes develop strong technical skills. This guide explains how to determine both the correct boot flex and Mondopoint size for alpine ski racing.

Quick Navigation: Boot Flex | Boot Size | Fit Notes

Determining Ski Boot Flex

Ski boot flex refers to how much resistance a boot provides when the skier flexes forward. In general, heavier and more aggressive racers require stiffer boots, while lighter or less experienced athletes benefit from a softer flex that is easier to bend and control.

A useful starting point is to compare racer weight to the recommended flex range below. Most racers perform best when their body weight is approximately 10–30 pounds higher than the flex rating of the boot. Skill level, strength, terrain, discipline, and personal preference can all influence the ideal choice.

Race Place Tip: These recommendations are intended as general guidelines. Consult your coach, boot fitter, or Race Place ski expert for personalized recommendations. Ski boot flex ratings can vary significantly between manufacturers.

Ski Boot Flex Recommendations

Racer Weight (lbs) Racer Weight (kg) Recommended Flex
50–80 23–36 65
80–100 36–45 70
100–120 45–54 90
120–150 54–68 110
130–160 60–73 120
150+ 68+ 130–140

Determining Your Ski Boot Size

Ski boots use the Mondopoint (MP) sizing system, which measures foot length in centimeters. Unlike street shoe sizes, Mondopoint sizing provides a more precise measurement for ski boot fitting.

For the most accurate measurement, stand with your heel against a wall and measure from the wall to the tip of your longest toe in centimeters. The resulting measurement is your approximate Mondopoint size.

Because race boots are designed for maximum precision and responsiveness, many racers choose a close-performance fit. Actual fit can vary slightly between brands and models, so we recommend trying on a similar boot whenever possible.

Race Place Fit Notes

  • Junior racers often benefit more from a properly fitting boot than a stiffer boot.
  • A race boot should fit snugly without causing pain or restricting circulation.
  • Performance-oriented race fits typically feel tighter than recreational ski boots.
  • Boot flex ratings are not standardized and can vary between manufacturers.
  • Professional boot fitting can significantly improve comfort, performance, and long-term development.

Description & Features

The Lange RS 110 SC junior race boot combines a precise 97mm race fit with a short cuff and responsive 110 flex for developing racers who need strong support without moving into a stiffer World Cup plug boot. The polyurethane shell and cuff, Dual 3D Full liner, and solid race sole create a close, direct connection for accurate edge control in SL, GS, training, and race-day skiing.

Dual Core construction delivers power and rebound through the turn, while Race Flex Adjust lets racers and bootfitters fine-tune flex without sacrificing efficient energy transmission between the shell and cuff. Lange's streamlined Aero Design further refines the RS platform with a shell and buckle profile developed to reduce aerodynamic drag.

Features

  • 97mm race last provides a close, low-volume fit for precise foot hold and control
  • Short Cuff design supports racers who benefit from a lower cuff height and more natural range of motion
  • 110 flex provides responsive support for developing and lighter race athletes
  • Dual Core construction delivers controlled flex, power, and responsive rebound
  • Race Flex Adjust allows flex to be softened by approximately 8% with the softer PU plate while maintaining energy transmission
  • Aero Design streamlines the molded shell and buckle profile to reduce aerodynamic drag
  • Dual 3D Full liner supports a close, performance-focused fit and efficient power transfer
  • Dual canting provides cuff alignment adjustment
  • 40mm power strap reinforces support around the upper cuff
  • Premium footbed provides a supportive platform inside the liner

Fit & Performance Technology

97mm Race Fit

The race-inspired 97mm last creates a close, low-volume fit that limits unwanted foot movement. The precise shape supports direct steering and efficient power transmission for demanding race skiing.

Short Cuff

The Short Cuff configuration provides a lower cuff height for racers who benefit from a shorter lower-leg fit. This supports a more natural stance and range of motion while retaining the support needed for technical race skiing.

Dual Core

Dual Core construction combines plastics with different characteristics to manage how the shell flexes and rebounds under load. The construction delivers responsive energy return and progressive power as the racer moves through the turn.

Race Flex Adjust

Race Flex Adjust uses a plate at the rear of the boot to manage energy transmission between the shell and cuff. Lange's softer polyurethane plate can reduce flex by approximately 8% while maintaining a solid connection without introducing unwanted play or energy loss.

Aero Design

Lange developed its Aero Design through wind-tunnel testing to refine the exterior shape of the RS race platform. The Air Flow concept optimizes the molded shell and buckle profile to reduce friction and aerodynamic drag.

RS Race Shell & Cuff Structure

The redesigned RS platform uses increased wall thickness, reinforced internal sole ribs, revised arch geometry, and a larger reinforced rear spine support to improve power, rebound, and shell consistency. The cuff pivot position is also aligned with Lange's World Cup Z platform for a race-focused mechanical feel.

Dual 3D Full Liner

The Dual 3D Full liner works with the close-fitting shell to support the foot and reduce unwanted movement inside the boot. The precise fit promotes accurate control and efficient power transmission to the ski.

Dual Canting

Dual canting provides cuff alignment adjustment to better match the boot to the racer's lower-leg position. Proper cuff alignment can support a balanced stance and more consistent edge engagement.
