Selecting the correct ski boot is one of the most important equipment decisions a racer can make. A properly fitted race boot improves control, edge engagement, power transfer, and comfort while helping athletes develop strong technical skills. This guide explains how to determine both the correct boot flex and Mondopoint size for alpine ski racing.

Quick Navigation: Boot Flex | Boot Size | Fit Notes

Determining Ski Boot Flex

Ski boot flex refers to how much resistance a boot provides when the skier flexes forward. In general, heavier and more aggressive racers require stiffer boots, while lighter or less experienced athletes benefit from a softer flex that is easier to bend and control.

A useful starting point is to compare racer weight to the recommended flex range below. Most racers perform best when their body weight is approximately 10–30 pounds higher than the flex rating of the boot. Skill level, strength, terrain, discipline, and personal preference can all influence the ideal choice.

Race Place Tip: These recommendations are intended as general guidelines. Consult your coach, boot fitter, or Race Place ski expert for personalized recommendations. Ski boot flex ratings can vary significantly between manufacturers.

Ski Boot Flex Recommendations

Racer Weight (lbs) Racer Weight (kg) Recommended Flex
50–80 23–36 65
80–100 36–45 70
100–120 45–54 90
120–150 54–68 110
130–160 60–73 120
150+ 68+ 130–140

Determining Your Ski Boot Size

Ski boots use the Mondopoint (MP) sizing system, which measures foot length in centimeters. Unlike street shoe sizes, Mondopoint sizing provides a more precise measurement for ski boot fitting.

For the most accurate measurement, stand with your heel against a wall and measure from the wall to the tip of your longest toe in centimeters. The resulting measurement is your approximate Mondopoint size.

Because race boots are designed for maximum precision and responsiveness, many racers choose a close-performance fit. Actual fit can vary slightly between brands and models, so we recommend trying on a similar boot whenever possible.

Race Place Fit Notes

  • Junior racers often benefit more from a properly fitting boot than a stiffer boot.
  • A race boot should fit snugly without causing pain or restricting circulation.
  • Performance-oriented race fits typically feel tighter than recreational ski boots.
  • Boot flex ratings are not standardized and can vary between manufacturers.
  • Professional boot fitting can significantly improve comfort, performance, and long-term development.

Technical Info

Race Code

The RACE CODE label of quality guarantees technological lead for professionals and ambitious skiers, direct from Fischer’s racing department: The close contact of the Fischer development team with athletes and trainers ensures that valuable inputs from the piste are implemented directly in technological innovations. Because victory is a question of perfect details.

Phatt Maxx Race

55mm wide power strap for enhanced power and pressure transfer. Outfitted with velcro backing supporting 1mm and 3mm shims to ensure a perfect shell and liner hold.

Low-Tolerance Race Cuff

The completely redesigned cuff offers new geometry and reduces the tolerance of cuff motion under heavy racing force resulting in higher force transmission to the ski throughout the flex. Maintains a 16° forward lean but offers additional forward clearance of the lower shell and removes rear gap.

Lace Liner

Lace Liners provide a better and more compact support in the shell and for the foot, especially on the insteps and heel fit.

Grindable Bootboard

Specifically engineered to allow boot fitters to easily modifiy the height and angle of the bootboard.

RD20 Race Canting

The next generation of race canting is design to reduce the tolerance between cuff and shell of the boot, allowing for maximum power transfer and overall control. Available in 2 and 3 point asymmetrical versions to enable cuff canting.

TPU Cuff & Shell

Thermoshape polyurethane (TPU) material is the benchmark and industry standard for race products, as it offers superior ski boot "suspension" compared to polyamid or polypropylene mixtures. TPU makes for a phenomenal ski experience due to the rebound and energy transfer characteristics. ZoneFit and Vacuum moldable at 120° C.
