Choosing the correct race ski length is one of the most important equipment decisions for any alpine racer. Ski length affects stability, turn initiation, edge grip, and overall confidence on the course. While FIS regulations establish minimum lengths for many competitive athletes, younger and non-FIS racers should select ski length based primarily on weight, ability, and coach recommendations.

FIS Race Ski Regulations

FIS equipment regulations are updated regularly and may vary by age class, gender, and competition level. Before purchasing race skis, always verify the current equipment rules for your league or governing body.

Race Place Tip: FIS regulations establish minimum equipment standards, but your coach should always be your primary resource when selecting race skis.

Non-FIS Race Ski Size Guide

For junior racers and non-FIS competition, ski length is best determined by athlete weight rather than height alone. The recommendations below provide starting points for athletes using one multi-event ski or separate Slalom (SL) and Giant Slalom (GS) skis.

Racer Weight (lb) Weight (kg) Multi-Event (cm) Slalom (SL) Giant Slalom (GS)
40–50 18–23 100–110
50–60 23–27 110–120
60–70 27–32 120–130 120–130 130–140
70–80 32–36 130–140 125–130 135–145
80–90 36–41 130–140 140–150
90–100 41–45 135–145 145–155
100–110 45–50 140–150 150–165
110–120 50–54 145–155 160–175
120–130 54–59 150–160 170–180
130–140 59–63 150–160 175–185
140–150 63–68 155–165 180+
150+ 68+ 155–165 180+

Race Ski Sizing Considerations

The size chart above provides a solid starting point, but several additional factors should influence your final ski selection.

  • Verify current FIS, U.S. Ski & Snowboard, or league-specific equipment regulations before purchasing.
  • Advanced racers often benefit from longer skis because they provide greater stability and edge grip at higher speeds.
  • Beginning and developing racers generally progress faster on skis that are easier to control rather than oversized.
  • If you hope to get two seasons out of a pair of skis, avoid sizing up too much. Most coaches agree that a ski that fits properly today and becomes slightly short as the athlete grows will promote better skill development than one that is oversized from the beginning.
  • Consult your coach when selecting race skis, as they can recommend the most appropriate length based on the athlete’s ability, technique, and racing objectives.

Choosing Between Multi-Event and Event-Specific Skis

  • Multi-Event (MTE) skis are ideal for younger racers using one pair for both Slalom and Giant Slalom.
  • As athletes progress, separate SL and GS skis provide better performance for each discipline.
  • If an older athlete uses one pair for both events, selecting an SL ski one size longer than the ideal SL length generally offers the best balance between events.

Race Place Fit Notes

  • Weight is generally a better sizing indicator than height for junior race skis.
  • Race ski sizing recommendations vary by manufacturer, ski construction, and athlete ability.
  • FIS regulations change periodically, so always verify current rules before purchasing.
  • When in doubt, consult your coach or contact the Race Place team for personalized sizing recommendations.

Technical Info

REVOSHOCK TECHNOLOGY

Utilizing a series of spring steel modules, each encased in impact-absorbing elastomer, Atomic's revolutionary new Revoshock technology acts as a built-in suspension system for your skis to block distracting shocks before they reach your feet. So whether you're straight-lining groomers or making fast turns at your limit, the race-proven Redster Revoshock provides a smoother, more precise run — freeing you up to concentrate on your skiing in total confidence.

Revoshock doesn't just absorb impacts — it rebounds them. From your ski tip to the binding plate, each spring steel module works in harmony to turn wasted energy into valuable acceleration out of the turn. And because a vibration-free ski leads to a more confident skier, you'll find yourself pushing harder and faster than ever before.

Atomic Revoshock

FULL SIDEWALL

Full sidewall runs across the full length of the ski for precise steering.

ULTRA POWER WOODCORE

A sporty, dynamic ash and poplar woodcore that adds a ton of stability and dampens vibrations at speed.

ULTRA TITANIUM POWERED

A titanium layer above and below the core creates supreme shock absorption, strong running stability and a high torsional flex.

ACTIVE CAMBER

With Active Camber, more of the ski’s edge length stays in contact with the snow. This creates a better grip on icy slopes and makes the ski super stable.
