FIS Race Ski Sizing Guidelines

FIS regulations change frequently, so it is best to consult with your coach or local ski expert before making a final purchase. Please see the current FIS Specifications for Competition Equipment and USSA/FIS Equipment Rules for specific age and circuit rules.

NON-FIS Race Ski Sizing Guidelines

There are varying opinions on how to best size skis, but the most accurate method to size race skis is based on the athlete's weight. The chart below recommends what size should work best for young athletes using one pair of skis for both events and athletes using Slalom (SL) and Giant Slalom (GS) specific skis. If an older athlete is using one pair for both events, it is best to choose an SL ski that is one size longer than the ideal SL length. A long SL ski will still work for SL and be very serviceable for GS. These are loose guidelines, and you should consult your local coach or ski expert for more specific recommendations.

Sizing Considerations:

  1. Consult FIS, USSA, and other level appropriate regulations.

Click here for 2025-2026 FIS SPECIFICATIONS FOR ALPINE COMPETITION EQUIPMENT
  2. Racer's ability level and preference - more advanced skiers can generally handle longer length skis, which can be more stable at higher speeds.
  3. Growth of the athlete - you may want to consider sizing up a little if you want to get multiple years out of a younger racer's skis, although most coaches agree that skiing on a slightly shorter ski the second year is preferable to skiing on a ski that is too long.
  4. Coach's recommendations.

Description & Features

The Volkl Racetiger JR SL ski is a junior slalom race ski designed for developing athletes who need quick edge engagement and precise control. Built for U12 to U14 racers, it delivers a smooth, predictable feel through tight, technical courses.

A torsionally soft tip in shorter lengths helps initiate turns easily and consistently, giving young racers confidence as they develop timing and line choice. The construction evolves with length, using a Grown Layup to adjust Titanal thickness and core composition for balanced performance at every stage.

Full sidewall construction, a multi-layer wood core, and a race-ready base provide strong edge grip and reliable energy through the turn. The integrated Marker Junior Race Plate enhances power transfer while maintaining a smooth, forgiving flex pattern.

Construction & Technology

Grown Layup

Construction is tuned by length, adjusting Titanal thickness and core composition to match skier size and ability. This ensures consistent performance across the full size range.

Full Titanal Construction

Titanal layers provide stability and damping, helping young racers stay balanced and controlled through quick slalom turns.

Multi-layer & Tailored Torsion Woodcore

Wood core construction evolves by length. Softer flex patterns support smaller racers, while stiffer configurations in longer lengths improve power and precision.

Torsional Soft Tip

A softer tip design in shorter lengths improves turn initiation and helps developing racers engage the edge more easily.

Full Sidewall ABS

Provides consistent edge grip and precise power transfer for better control on firm race surfaces.

Tip Rocker

An early-rise tip improves turn initiation while maintaining strong edge hold through the rest of the ski.

Zebra Base Structure

An aggressive base pattern that improves glide and steering precision in slalom race conditions.

Race Finish

World Cup-level base and edge preparation designed for maximum grip and speed.
