FIS Race Ski Sizing Guidelines

FIS regulations change frequently, so it is best to consult with your coach or local ski expert before making a final purchase. Please see the current FIS Specifications for Competition Equipment and USSA/FIS Equipment Rules for specific age and circuit rules.

NON-FIS Race Ski Sizing Guidelines

There are varying opinions on how to best size skis, but the most accurate method to size race skis is based on the athlete's weight. The chart below recommends what size should work best for young athletes using one pair of skis for both events and athletes using Slalom (SL) and Giant Slalom (GS) specific skis. If an older athlete is using one pair for both events, it is best to choose an SL ski that is one size longer than the ideal SL length. A long SL ski will still work for SL and be very serviceable for GS. These are loose guidelines, and you should consult your local coach or ski expert for more specific recommendations.

Sizing Considerations:

  1. Consult FIS, USSA, and other level appropriate regulations.
Click here for 2025 USSA/FIS Equipment Rules
Click here for 2025-2026 FIS SPECIFICATIONS FOR ALPINE COMPETITION EQUIPMENT
  2. Racer's ability level and preference - more advanced skiers can generally handle longer length skis, which can be more stable at higher speeds.
  3. Growth of the athlete - you may want to consider sizing up a little if you want to get multiple years out of a younger racer's skis, although most coaches agree that skiing on a slightly shorter ski the second year is preferable to skiing on a ski that is too long.
  4. Coach's recommendations.

Description & Features

The Volkl Racetiger WC FIS GS ski is a World Cup giant slalom race ski built for precision, stability, and speed. Designed for elite GS racers, this ski delivers the power and edge hold needed to stay aggressive through long, high-speed turns.

Tailored Carbon Tip technology positions carbon fibers along key stress lines to control torsional stiffness and improve turn initiation. The result is a direct, responsive feel that helps you engage the edge early and hold a clean line through the course.

A full Titanal construction paired with a solid ash wood core provides strong damping and energy return. Combined with full phenol sidewalls and a race-tuned base, this GS race ski delivers maximum grip, stability, and acceleration out of every turn.

Construction & Technology

Tailored Carbon Tip

Carbon fibers are embroidered onto a carrier material and placed precisely along stress lines. This controls torsional stiffness and improves responsiveness, allowing faster turn initiation and more precise edge engagement.

Full Titanal Construction

Multiple layers of Titanal increase stability, damping, and power. The ski remains smooth and controlled at high speeds while delivering strong energy through the turn.

World Cup Ash Wood Core

A dense ash core provides excellent vibration damping and acts as an energy reservoir, storing energy during the turn and releasing it for strong rebound and acceleration.

Full Sidewall Phenol

Durable phenol sidewalls enhance edge grip and make tuning more precise, giving consistent performance on hard race surfaces.

Tip Rocker

An early-rise tip combined with camber allows smoother turn initiation while maintaining strong edge hold through the body of the ski.

Zebra Base Structure

An aggressive base pattern designed to improve glide and steering precision, especially in high-speed GS conditions.

Race Finish

World Cup-level base and edge preparation with precise angles for maximum grip and speed out of the wrapper.
