FIS Race Ski Sizing Guidelines

FIS regulations change frequently, so it is best to consult with your coach or local ski expert before making a final purchase. Please see the current FIS Specifications for Competition Equipment and USSA/FIS Equipment Rules for specific age and circuit rules.

NON-FIS Race Ski Sizing Guidelines

There are varying opinions on how to best size skis, but the most accurate method to size race skis is based on the athlete's weight. The chart below recommends what size should work best for young athletes using one pair of skis for both events and athletes using Slalom (SL) and Giant Slalom (GS) specific skis. If an older athlete is using one pair for both events, it is best to choose an SL ski that is one size longer than the ideal SL length. A long SL ski will still work for SL and be very serviceable for GS. These are loose guidelines, and you should consult your local coach or ski expert for more specific recommendations.

Sizing Considerations:

  1. Consult FIS, USSA, and other level appropriate regulations.
Click here for 2025 USSA/FIS Equipment Rules
Click here for 2025-2026 FIS SPECIFICATIONS FOR ALPINE COMPETITION EQUIPMENT
  2. Racer's ability level and preference - more advanced skiers can generally handle longer length skis, which can be more stable at higher speeds.
  3. Growth of the athlete - you may want to consider sizing up a little if you want to get multiple years out of a younger racer's skis, although most coaches agree that skiing on a slightly shorter ski the second year is preferable to skiing on a ski that is too long.
  4. Coach's recommendations.

Description & Features

2027 Rossignol HERO Athlete GS skis are built for competitive U16 athletes racing giant slalom. Developed from Rossignol’s World Cup race program, this GS ski delivers powerful edge grip, stability at speed, and precise control through long-radius turns.

Line Control Technology (LCT) eliminates counter-flexing to maintain smooth ski contact with the snow and a consistent trajectory through each turn. A wood core, Titanal reinforcement, and rectangular full sidewall construction combine to provide strong edge hold, stability, and energy transfer for developing racers pushing their speed on GS courses.

Key Features

  • U16 FIS Giant Slalom race ski
  • Line Control Technology (LCT) improves stability and line control
  • Cascade Tip Technology reduces swing weight and improves turn initiation
  • Wood Core provides natural dampness and consistent energy transfer
  • Full Titanal Layer increases torsional rigidity and stability
  • Rectangular Full Sidewall maximizes edge grip and precision
  • Oversized Sidecut improves carving performance and acceleration through turns
  • Full Camber with On-Trail Rocker delivers strong edge grip with smoother turn entry
  • R22 World Cup Plate enhances power transmission from boot to ski
  • Sintered UHD race base optimized for glide and durability

Construction & Technology

Line Control Technology (LCT)

LCT integrates a central power rail from tip to tail, eliminating counter-flexing. This maintains consistent ski contact with the snow for smoother stability and precise control through the turn.

Cascade Tip

Cascade Tip uses staggered layers of metal and fiberglass in the tip to reduce swing weight and control torsional flex, improving turn initiation and precision.

Titanal Construction

Titanal laminates increase torsional rigidity and damping, delivering stronger edge grip and stability at high speeds.

Rectangular Sidewall

Rectangular full sidewall construction combines layered core materials with vertical sidewalls to maximize edge grip, precision, and power transmission.

Wood Core

The wood core provides natural dampness and stability while maintaining consistent energy transfer through each turn.

Oversized Sidecut

An oversized sidecut profile increases tip flare and effective edge contact, improving carving precision and acceleration exiting the turn.

On-Trail Rocker

Traditional camber through most of the ski delivers powerful edge grip and rebound, while a subtle rocker in the tip allows smoother turn initiation and better control.
