FIS Race Ski Sizing Guidelines

FIS regulations change frequently, so it is best to consult with your coach or local ski expert before making a final purchase. Please see the current FIS Specifications for Competition Equipment and USSA/FIS Equipment Rules for specific age and circuit rules.

NON-FIS Race Ski Sizing Guidelines

There are varying opinions on how to best size skis, but the most accurate method to size race skis is based on the athlete's weight. The chart below recommends what size should work best for young athletes using one pair of skis for both events and athletes using Slalom (SL) and Giant Slalom (GS) specific skis. If an older athlete is using one pair for both events, it is best to choose an SL ski that is one size longer than the ideal SL length. A long SL ski will still work for SL and be very serviceable for GS. These are loose guidelines, and you should consult your local coach or ski expert for more specific recommendations.

Sizing Considerations:

  1. Consult FIS, USSA, and other level appropriate regulations.
Click here for 2025 USSA/FIS Equipment Rules
Click here for 2025-2026 FIS SPECIFICATIONS FOR ALPINE COMPETITION EQUIPMENT
  2. Racer's ability level and preference - more advanced skiers can generally handle longer length skis, which can be more stable at higher speeds.
  3. Growth of the athlete - you may want to consider sizing up a little if you want to get multiple years out of a younger racer's skis, although most coaches agree that skiing on a slightly shorter ski the second year is preferable to skiing on a ski that is too long.
  4. Coach's recommendations.

Description & Features

The Volkl Racetiger Racestock GS ski is a junior giant slalom race ski built to support developing athletes as they progress into longer-radius GS turns. Designed for U14 and U16 racers, it delivers the stability, precision, and control needed to build confidence at speed.

Tailored Carbon Tip technology places carbon fibers along key stress lines to refine torsional response and improve turn initiation. This creates a direct, predictable feel that helps racers stay on line through the course.

A full Titanal construction paired with a multi-layer wood core provides strong damping and energy transfer. Combined with full ABS sidewalls and a race-tuned base, this GS race ski offers reliable edge grip, smooth stability, and consistent performance as athletes advance.

Construction & Technology

Tailored Carbon Tip

Carbon fibers are precisely positioned along stress lines to control torsional stiffness and improve turn initiation, giving a more direct and responsive feel.

Full Titanal Construction

Titanal layers increase damping and stability, helping the ski stay composed at higher speeds and through longer GS turns.

Multi-layer Wood Core

A blend of beech and poplar wood balances strength, durability, and weight. Beech adds power and stability, while poplar reduces weight and improves responsiveness.

Full Sidewall ABS

Durable ABS sidewalls improve edge grip and make tuning easier and more precise.

Tip Rocker

An early-rise tip allows smoother turn initiation while maintaining strong edge hold through the body of the ski.

Zebra Base Structure

An aggressive base pattern that improves glide and steering precision, especially in firm race conditions.

Race Finish

World Cup-level base and edge preparation with precise angles for maximum grip and speed.
