FIS Race Ski Sizing Guidelines

FIS regulations change frequently, so it is best to consult with your coach or local ski expert before making a final purchase. Please see the current FIS Specifications for Competition Equipment and USSA/FIS Equipment Rules for specific age and circuit rules.

NON-FIS Race Ski Sizing Guidelines

There are varying opinions on how to best size skis, but the most accurate method to size race skis is based on the athlete's weight. The chart below recommends what size should work best for young athletes using one pair of skis for both events and athletes using Slalom (SL) and Giant Slalom (GS) specific skis. If an older athlete is using one pair for both events, it is best to choose an SL ski that is one size longer than the ideal SL length. A long SL ski will still work for SL and be very serviceable for GS. These are loose guidelines, and you should consult your local coach or ski expert for more specific recommendations.

Sizing Considerations:

  1. Consult FIS, USSA, and other level appropriate regulations.

Click here for 2025-2026 FIS SPECIFICATIONS FOR ALPINE COMPETITION EQUIPMENT
  2. Racer's ability level and preference - more advanced skiers can generally handle longer length skis, which can be more stable at higher speeds.
  3. Growth of the athlete - you may want to consider sizing up a little if you want to get multiple years out of a younger racer's skis, although most coaches agree that skiing on a slightly shorter ski the second year is preferable to skiing on a ski that is too long.
  4. Coach's recommendations.

Description & Features

The 2027 Atomic Redster S9 ICON SL ski is a U16 FIS slalom race ski built for quick edge changes, strong grip, and powerful acceleration. It is designed for developing racers who need a responsive ski that stays stable through tight, high-tempo slalom courses.

Revoshock S reduces vibration before it reaches your feet, helping you stay smooth and centered through ruts and impacts. Carbon Boost adds stiffness underfoot, increasing rebound and giving you more energy out of each turn.

The ICON Race Plate Interface allows the ski to flex naturally while maintaining a direct connection to the binding. Combined with Ultra Power Woodcore, Ultra TI Powered, and Full Sidewall construction, this ski delivers consistent edge hold and confidence on injected and firm race surfaces.

Construction & Technology

Revoshock S

A series of spring steel modules in an elastomer system absorbs impacts and reduces vibration. This keeps the ski smooth and helps generate more acceleration out of the turn.

Carbon Boost

Carbon inserts underfoot increase stiffness where it matters most. This adds snap and energy for faster, more powerful turn exits.

Ultra Power Woodcore

A blend of beech and poplar creates a strong, stable platform with a responsive feel for quick slalom turns.

Ultra TI Powered

Titanium layers above and below the core improve torsional rigidity and damping. This helps maintain edge grip and stability at speed.

Full Sidewall

Full-length sidewalls provide direct energy transfer to the edges. This improves grip and consistency on hard snow.

ICON Race Plate Interface

A race-specific interface that allows the ski to flex naturally while maintaining precise control. Compatible only with Atomic ICON bindings.
