There are varying opinions on how to best size skis, but the general rule for modern ski length is between the skier's chin to the top of the head, depending on the type of skiing and the ability of the user. The guidelines below are for race skis and start with the athlete's height, which you add or subtract length based on discipline, gender, weight, age, and ability of the racer. These are loose guides and you should consult your local coach or ski expert for more specific recommendations.

FIS regulations change frequently, so it is best to consult with your coach or local ski expert before making a final purchase. Please see the current USSA/FIS Equipment Rules for specific age and circuit rules.

Non-FIS Race Ski Sizing Recommendations

Slalom (SL) skis are generally measured between the chin and nose. Giant Slalom (GS) are generally a bit longer and are measured between the nose and top of the head. Lighter weight and less experienced skiers may want to go with a ski that is a bit shorter than the chart below. The opposite is applied to heavier or more aggressive ski racers and you may want to go a bit longer. Again these are only loose recommendations and you should consult with your local ski expert for more specific advice.

Sizing Considerations:

  2. Racer's height to weight ratio - a heavier racer may need a longer ski.
  3. Racer's ability level and preference - more advanced skiers can generally handle longer length skis which can be more stable at higher speeds.
  4. Growth of the athlete - you may want to consider sizing up a little if you want to get multiple years out of a younger racer's skis, although most coaches agree that skiing on a slightly shorter ski the second year is preferable to skiing on a ski that is too long.

3D.GLASS Construction

3D.GLASS is Völkl’s latest development to furthermore improve overall ski performance and stability even in harsh snow conditions. Compared to classic glass construction, the three-dimensional and multiple-folded glass layers in the tip, tail, and binding area result in increased edge grip and more lively rebound in turns.

UVO.3D is the first freely rotating, vibration damper to apply cutting-edge vibration dampening technology to minimizing disruptive ski vibration.

The terrain or surface below the ski inevitably generates vibrations, which in turn set the shovel in particular into motion in all directions. This significantly disrupts the smoothness of the ski-ride, and makes it harder to hold an edge.

The revolutionary UVO technology counteracts this, with proven dampening or reduction of vibrations in the horizontal and vertical directions as well as along the length of the ski. The ride becomes smoother and the edge grip improves.


Ski sidewall/core technology intended for aggressive on-piste and racing capable of delivering the victory, even if it is measured in hundredths of seconds.

The sidewall is laminated to extremely stable layers of hardwood with more flexible, lighter wood built into the center of the sandwich core. The hardwood imparts higher power transmission, improves the edge grip, and supports the edge against external forces. While the low weight of the softwood center brings more agility, maneuverability, and reduces overall ski weight. The combination of both wood types running through the entire ski length contributes to an optimal distribution of the ski stiffness precise steering.


An early-rise tip design for racing. The combination of an early rise tip and a classic camber profile in the rest of the ski provides easy, smooth turn entry regardless of conditions. The ski is forgiving and easy to handle.
