FIS Race Ski Sizing Guidelines

FIS regulations change frequently, so it is best to consult with your coach or local ski expert before making a final purchase. Please see the current FIS Specifications for Competition Equipment and USSA/FIS Equipment Rules for specific age and circuit rules.

NON-FIS Race Ski Sizing Guidelines

There are varying opinions on how to best size skis, but the most accurate method to size race skis is based on the athlete's weight. The chart below recommends what size should work best for young athletes using one pair of skis for both events and athletes using Slalom (SL) and Giant Slalom (GS) specific skis. If an older athlete is using one pair for both events, it is best to choose an SL ski that is one size longer than the ideal SL length. A long SL ski will still work for SL and be very serviceable for GS. These are loose guidelines, and you should consult your local coach or ski expert for more specific recommendations.

Sizing Considerations:

  1. Consult FIS, USSA, and other level appropriate regulations.

  2. Racer's ability level and preference - more advanced skiers can generally handle longer length skis which can be more stable at higher speeds.
  3. Growth of the athlete - you may want to consider sizing up a little if you want to get multiple years out of a younger racer's skis, although most coaches agree that skiing on a slightly shorter ski the second year is preferable to skiing on a ski that is too long.
  4. Coach's recommendations.

Technical Info

Tailored Carbon Tip (193 cm)

The latest Volkl technology is Tailored Fibre Placement. The Tailored Carbon Tips are produced in an innovative manufacturing process by embroidering the individual carbon fibers onto a carrier material. This allows them to be positioned precisely along stress lines, delivering just the right response from the tip during turn initiation. The stiffness and torsion can be adjusted via the fiber thickness and millimeter-precise alignment. In this way, the fibers guide the dynamics to the parts of the ski where they are needed. The visibly integrated Tailored Carbon Tips are lightweight and allow the ski to build up energy, getting the skier into the turn quickly with incredible control and precision.

ULTIMATE VIBRATION OBJECT 3D (188 cm)

UVO.3D is the first freely rotating, vibration damper to apply cutting-edge vibration dampening technology to minimizing disruptive ski vibration.

The terrain or surface below the ski inevitably generates vibrations, which in turn set the shovel in particular into motion in all directions. This significantly disrupts the smoothness of the ski-ride, and makes it harder to hold an edge.

The revolutionary UVO technology counteracts this, with proven dampening or reduction of vibrations in the horizontal and vertical directions as well as along the length of the ski. The ride becomes smoother and the edge grip improves.

POWERED BY TITANIUM

Constructed of extra thin and strong aluminum alloy providing perfect dampening characteristics. The titanium setup makes the ski agile and dynamic, especially friends of a hard, fast, and aggressive riding style benefit from the quick response of this construction.

ASH WOOD CORE

The high-quality solid ash core is a technical highlight that has great impact on the ski's overall feel, making it smooth and powerful for fast runs on firm snow.

This resilient hardwood acts as an energy accumulator: while the ski flexes when initiating the turn, the fibers stretch and build up energy. At the exit of the turn, this accumulated energy is released, giving the ski a prodigious rebound and energy. Due to the specific stretching behavior of ash, the ski also absorbs the energy from imperfections in the snow surface, resulting in the greatest possible stability and smoothness.

TIP ROCKER

An early-rise tip design for racing. The combination of an early rise tip and a classic camber profile in the rest of the ski provides easy, smooth turn entry regardless of conditions. The ski is forgiving and easy to handle.

RACE FINISH

For a better grip in fast and tight turns World Cup skis come with a special race finish edging. While the SL models feature 0.7° on the base and 87.6° on the side, the GS models come with a 0.8° base and 87.6° on the side.

Zebra Base Structure

The Zebra pattern is a more aggressive base structure to offer the best possible precision & steering characteristics for the front of the skis.
